There are several directions an engineer can take as they advance. Moving directly upward allows someone to become a project manager. For more specific details on engineering positions in the career ladder, the American Society of Civil Engineers offers a set of guidelines on general positions for engineers, rating job levels from Grade I-VIII. We’ve summarized the details on the responsibilities for each position below, including common job titles for the role, responsibilities, and the experience and education engineers at that level are expected to have. We’ve also included the equivalent federal level (also known as the GS or General Schedule level) for those who will work with or in the government.
Grade I, II, and III Engineers (GS-5 to GS-9)
Engineer in Training, Engineering Intern, Assistant Engineer, Junior Engineer, Staff Engineer, Engineering Instructor
Responsibilities for Grade I-III engineers vary from basic data collection and analysis to working on small projects, adapting methods to finish work, preparing project documents, and assigning work to entry-level employees. While beginning engineers will need guidance on all aspects of the job, more senior employees only need direction on complex problems that need to be solved. They also help with client communications and contracts.
Experience and Education:
Engineers at this level typically have up to three years’ experience, as well as an engineering Bachelor’s degree. More experienced engineers may also be part of a professional practice organization or a local program or committee.
Grade IV Engineers (GS-11)
Civil Engineer, Associate Engineer, Project Engineer, Resident Engineer, Assistant Professor
The next level of engineers design and work on moderate projects or parts of large projects while presenting project-specific information at meetings. They also deal with customers, contractors, and officials. These engineers generally adapt procedures, assign and coordinate work while helping with proposals for funding or potential jobs. Meanwhile, they are given guidance on complex problems and key objectives.
Experience and Education:
Grade IV engineers usually have master’s degrees and more than four years’ experience, as well as Professional Engineer licenses. Faculty members should have doctorates. However, they should continue learning to keep up with the field. These engineers can also organize community service and be members of professional practice organizations, or act as chairs of local programs or committees.
Grade V Engineers (GS-12)
Senior Engineer, Project Manager, Associate Professor
Grade V engineers work on major or complicated projects, overseeing budgets and schedules, and developing techniques to finish the job while advising upper-level managers. They also write proposals for jobs or funding and approve budgets and represent the organization while presenting at conferences about their specific work.
Experience and Education:
This level of engineer usually has at least eight years’ experience with the same educational and license qualifications as a Grade IV engineer. They can be national board, technical or policy committee members, national board officers, or members of a professional organization.
Grade VI Engineers (GS-13)
Principle Engineer, District Engineer, Engineering Manager, Professor
Grade VI engineers expand their expertise to organization-wide problems and developments while acting as technical specialists advising in how methods and concepts should be applied in their area. They also plan activities for multiple major projects as well as the full work schedule of the organization to which they belong. These engineers also lead presentations and represent the organization. The only guidance they need is broad objectives and limits from upper management.
Experience and Education:
These engineers generally have the same education and licenses as Grade IV, but they’ll have more than ten years of experience and can also have advanced certifications in specialties or other areas. Their professional memberships can also be the same as Grade V engineers.
Grade VII Engineers (GS-14)
Director, Program Manager, City Engineer, County Engineer, Division Engineer, Department Head, Vice President
Engineers at Grade VII plan for and deal with unexpected problems while setting priorities and developing standards and guidelines, either for broad programs or intensely specialized fields. They generally supervise multiple teams or departments, take care of legal and financial issues, and can persuade and negotiate in terms of critical issues. They also maintain contact with other organizations and interact with leaders and key officials.
Experience and Education:
Engineers at this level can have similar qualifications to engineers at lower levels. The main difference is their level of experience, at over 15 years. They can, however, also be recognized experts in statewide activities and act as a resource for national organizations.
Grade VIII Engineers (GS-14, Senior Executive Service (SES))
Bureau Engineer, Director of Public Works, Dean, President
As the top level of engineer, these people make broad decisions and set programs for an organization, answering to regional councils or boards of directors. Grade VIII engineers can advise either on broad programs or innovative and important specialized programs, but they also negotiate critical issues with other organizations and represent their organization in the media and at functions like conferences.
Experience and Education:
Grade VIII engineers generally have more than 20 years of experience with the same educations and certifications as lower levels. However, they can also serve on state and national boards or be recognized experts on the national level, as well as being spokespeople for the profession.
